Holmes Junior High Music Department
Second Quarter Grading Requirements
Concert Bands

Grades are calculated based on performance in FOUR areas; Musicianship, Practice Sheets, Daily Classwork and now adding Performance. Each area is worth ONE-FOURTH of your quarter grade. If you are a Percussionist substitute the Musicianship for Percussionists in place of regular Musicianship.

Musicianship...
is the ability of an individual to perform at a particular level of proficiency.

By using the "TIPPS for Bands" method book by Nilo W. Hovey, Copyright 1959 by BELWIN, Inc.
and

Before a student can start to "check-off" their Second Quarter musicianship requirements, they must have

  • completed all of the previous First Quarter requirements...
  • In addition to those requirements, students must have performed #81 in the "TIPPS" method book, and #'s 3, 4, 5, & 6, on page 25 of the Belwin First Division, Part 2 book for a grade. Again, these 2 requirements have to be played perfectly in order for students to start their Second Quarter "check offs'"

IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AN "A" IN MUSICIANSHIP FOR THE SECOND QUARTER A STUDENT MUST

    1. Play EIGHT scales, of which FOUR must be from memory, up and down at m.m. [quarter note]=120
    2. Play FOUR arpeggio types in the "TIPPS" book (ie. #28, 15, 54, etc.) If you "checked-off" #28 before, you do not need to play it again and can count it as one of your four that has to be done
    3. Play rhythm patterns #48-86, (6/8 time in TWO, not six beats to a measure) in "TIPPS" back cover
    4. Play #101, plus any two of the following - #102,103, or 104
    5. "Check-off" any music given by the instructor. (A letter grade will be given for this requirement.)

    Practice Sheets
Practice Sheets, (COUNTED AS HOMEWORK!) must be turned in once a week on Fridays for one-third of your grade. (If absent Friday, turn in the next day you are back in school. For an "A" grade, you must practice at least 100 minutes. Extra minutes may be added for extra credit and can be used for any weeks practice minutes not previously turned in. YOU CAN ONLY TURN IN THREE WEEKS OF LATE PRACTICE!(300 minutes)

    Daily Classwork and Classroom Participation
This means different things to different students...If you don't know what a perfect student does in class, ask Mr. Gonzalez.

    Performance
All students are required to perform in the Annual Winter Concert

    Musicianship for Percussion Players
