Introduction: who we are, what we do.
The Davis Men's Council was founded in 1993 to assist men in making
connections with one another. In addition to linking men together
to form new support groups, for ten years the Council has held annual
day-long men's gatherings, which combine important ritual work,
poetry and experiential work in large a group setting. The

Many men have longed for a brother, a mentor, or group of friends in which to feel safe. The Council recognizes that men have often felt disconnected and let down in their contacts with other men, as if searching without a map. It is the Council's belief that a new paradigm was needed. A paradigm which shifts men's historic pattern of performing tasks and services as the primary vehicle for connection to a safe group setting that encourages men to talk openly, honestly and meaningfully.
To create this new paradigm, the Council has taken the position that men benefit by being in groups with other men. These groups, whether small self-directed support groups or larger facilitated gatherings, provide a safe structure for men to do "men's work", i.e. to learn about themselves and to assist men in their healing as they build new connections. The Davis Men's Council's goal is to foster and build a safe "community" where men can gather together in small and large groups. The experience of being seen and heard, by fellow men, the Council believes, is the cornerstone of having a supportive community.
